Men's Black Tie

Black Tie Dress Code / Cravate Noire

If you find one of the above words on your invitation, you're expected to wear a tuxedo.

Tuxedos can be either single- or double-breasted, and are usually dark blue or black.

If you prefer a single-breasted tuxedo, you could go for the classic style with a shawl-collar.

The style you choose is just a matter of taste.

Larger men should go for the double-breasted style, as it is more flattering for fuller figures.

White tuxedo jackets (dinner jacket) have the same cut as a normal tuxedo, but you should only wear it for outdoor events.

Trousers should be black or dark blue, depending on the colours of your jacket, and there is a single silk stripe down each outside seam.

They should not have a turned-up hem.

You should wear a white tuxedo shirt with turned-up cuffs.

The button panel is often covered, or the breast area is sometimes decorated with pleats.

According to the official dress code you are expected to wear a black tie with a tuxedo (only waiters wear white ties with tuxedos.)

A black cummerbund should cover the overlap of shirt and trousers and should be worn with the pleats facing upwards.

You should wear black knee-high wool or silk stockings combined with elegant patent leather shoes.

To give your outfit the finishing touch, you could add a white drape and cuff links.

Women's Black Tie

Black Tie Dress Code / Cravate Noire

If Black Tie is mentioned on the invitation, you should wear a long evening gown.

Trouser suits are acceptable too, but only if they are extremely smart and elegant.

The dress needn't be as formal as White Tie, so you could choose a trendier style.

You should wear nice jewelry and maybe evening gloves.

Of course, Black Tie differs slightly from country to country.

Therefore, it is probably the best choice to inform yourself and according to the social and occupational background of your host.
