Women's Evening Wear

Choosing the appropriate women's evening outfit depends on many different things.

Most importantly, your outfit must suit the occasion.

Some occasions demand a dress-code and others are more casual with no special requirements.

There are also a few other points to consider when choosing your perfect evening outfit, but you will find more about this later.

Lets start with the type of occasion you ll be attending:

If the event you are invited to has a dress code, it is usually mentioned on the invitation.
It might sound unusual but it still is the men`s clothing that determines an event`s dress code. Men are told how to dress, and women have to know how to dress accordingly.

Therefore, if you are invited to such an event, consider the following:

White Tie / Cravat Blanche

If White Tie is mentioned on the invitation, women should wear a very formal, long dress.

Now we will give you some more general advice on choosing your perfect evening wear, if you receive an invitation without a dress-code.

Ball

If you go to a ball, you should choose a long evening dress, i.e. it should at least cover your knees. However, the best choice for such an event is a floor-length evening dress.

We recommend a flowing style, as anything too tight or restrictive will make it difficult to dance. You should choose quite, dark colours rather than bright colours.

There are a lot of different kinds of evening dresses available. So best pick the style you feel most comfortable in. Before buying an evening dress, do a few dance steps and try sitting down to make sure it feels comfortable.

Dinner / Banquet

For a formal dinner you may wear a long evening dress or something a bit shorter. It should, however, cover your knees. It is also considered correct to wear stockings with your dress. Again, make sure your dress is comfortable to sit down in.

Theatre / Opera

If you go to the theatre or an opera, your evening wear should fit the musical background.
An elegant evening dress is enough - it need not be a formal long evening dress.
A classic black cocktail dress would be perfect for the theatre, but if you go to a premiere you should consider wearing a long formal evening dress.
